The Canon 7D is a incredible addition to the Canon DSLR family. The Canon 7D has taken many features of Canon DSLRs to the next step. For example the auto-focus system has an incredible nineteen points for its auto focus operations. This DSLR is extremely fast, providing up to eight frames per second. This makes it perfect for the fastest of moving kids at play or for sports photography along with wildlife photography.
The Canon EOS 7D is good in low light situations. It has an ISO range from 100 to 6400; This can be further extended up to 12,000. However, if you do a lot of low light shooting, the Canon 5D Mark III might be better suited for your needs.
Canon 7D Review
You can also capture full HD movies with the Canon 7D and save them in a wide variety of sizes and formats. The movies can be displayed on your TV or computer monitor in full high definition with the HDMI output built into the camera. While I prefer to use a dedicated movie capture device for movies, if I don’t have one with me the 7D comes in very handy when a movie is better than a picture.
The viewfinder provides you with full 100% coverage of the field of view. The Canon 7D also has a wide angle view built into the system. I always have problems with my horizontal and vertical lines. This gets magnified when I shoot seascapes. This camera comes with nice tilt and electronic level. It makes the camera feel a bit like a jet fighter.
The auto focus system of the Canon EOS 7D compensates for artificial lighting. The auto-focus can be set to help keep track of a moving object. In macro mode, the focus compensates for the movement of the camera or the subject. I miss my younger days when I could take a picture in ranges where the experts indicated one would need a tripod. These days, I need a tripod for nearly all of my shots. I’m exaggerating but the continuous refocusing can help you get that sharp in focus picture you might not otherwise be able to acquire. Something that has always been a challenge is to get an insect to stop moving and pose for you.
The Canon 7D is intended for a serious hobbyist and semi-pro photographer. I know of many professionals that use this camera as a backup camera and some that use it as their primary camera. The camera delivers images captured at 18 megapixels.
The camera feels great in your hand. I had been shooting with an old Canon Rebel XT. It is 10 years old and still working just fine. It is substantially heavier than my old XT.
The camera body is made with a magnesium frame. So it is a solid camera and built for rugged use. It also provides a substantial amount of weather sealing. I’m an American spending my retirement in the Philippines. That was a significant reason for my choosing the Canon 7D. The high humidity and frequent rains has me putting my XT under my clothes in a futile attempt to protect it. So far, it has worked out just fine though. I do need the weather sealing and was a major factor for me.
Software Bundled With the Canon 7D
The Canon 7D comes with some decent software bundled with it. However, for a camera of this quality, I highly recommend you obtain Adobe Lightroom. Also get Adobe Photoshop for extra control. However, if you learn how to use Lightroom, it will take care of nearly all your editing needs. It also helps to catalog your photos. If you take your time when you import them into Lightroom, and complete the data fields, I t will be much easier to find your photographs later. You might also want to consider adding a Wacom Tablet to your purchase. These tablets make it much easier to edit your pictures.
With my old VHS-C video camera coming to the end of its life, that too made it easier to choose the Canon
7D. The video mode of the EOS 7D does not have an auto focus. This concerned me a good deal but you’ll find that you can quickly handle that yourself. The video aspect of this camera is intended for serious videographers. I see the HD video as an added bonus. It really comes in handy if you don’t happen to have a dedicated video camera with you. Chances are high, you’ll find you no longer need one.
One thing that drew me to this camera was my need to replace my aging video camera. I don’t view this camera as a replacement for a video camera. However, if you’re out and don’t have a video camera, the video mode is a nice option to have. The video mode does not have auto focus. However, you’ll find that you can quickly learn to handle that yourself.

Another enthusiastic Canon EOS 7D owner said the following about the camera:
This is the 3rd Canon DSLR I have owned. I upgraded from the 50D. I wasn’t sure I should spend the money on an upgrade. I’m sure now, it was worth spending the money to step up to this DSLR.
